World Book Day is back!

Thursday 2nd March 2017 sees World Book Day celebrated its 20th anniversary.

World Book Day is a charity event held annually celebrating authors, books and reading. It aims to allow kids to explore the depths of books, the imagination that is gained from reading and provide them with the opportunity to own a book of their own for free.

National book tokens are given out to children at school across the nation which entitles them to pick one of ten free books- all of which is new and exclusive, or receive £1 off a book of their choice.

Government studies have shown that children who regularly read novels outside of school are associated with higher scores in reading assessments than those who don’t. In the study, Clark and Rumbold said that there are also other benefits of reading for pleasure. These include increased general knowledge, a better understanding of other cultures and attaining a broader vocabulary.

Everyone can take part in world book day. It is dedicated to helping children engage more with the books and authors that they love as well as aiding them in the exploration of new books and authors that they will love just as much.

It is a day for children to run with their imagination and enjoy the benefits that reading brings to them.

World Book Day

To mark the wonders of reading, the event sees children all over the UK dress up as their favourite characters as well as take part in endless activities and events that schools run in celebration of the day.

The concept of fancy dress has been around for a long time, but why is fancy dress so important?

Fancy dress can really benefit a child’s social and emotional development. Using their imagination, through the characters from their favourite books in this instance, gives them a basis and a perfect ice-breaker to interact and engage with other children as well as building the confidence to socailise and interact with adults. Fancy dress also makes for expanding a child’s imagination so they do not just stick to stereotypes.

Going to school in fancy dress is a hugely exciting prospect for many children but for parents can often be stressful with trying to find outfit ideas and inspiration. Fear not! The Books Trust has generated a list of its 100 top books which might just help with some ideas for World Book Day.

Here are some ideas of easy costumes which can be made at home and won’t set you back in pocket.
