Safer Internet Day will be celebrated globally on Tuesday 7 February with the slogan “Be the change: Unite for a better internet”.

The day is coordinated by the UK Safer Internet Centre and sees hundreds of organisations around the world get involved in promoting the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

Safer Internet Day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community.

Find out how you can get involved & download free education resources at https://www.saferinternet.org.uk.

Our Tips for Safe Internet Use for Young People

  • Use caution with your personal information

When online, try to avoid publishing your full name, school name, home address, email address and phone numbers where they are easily accessible such as social networking websites. When asked to provide personal information, ensure you seek parental guidance.

  • Think before you post

Think about what you are posting online before you do it – never post anything you wouldn’t want your parents or teachers to see. Even if you delete it, it can still be found.

  • Be careful when speaking to people online

People you meet online may not be who they say they are – don’t share any personal information with people you don’t know. Never agree to meet someone you don’t know online.

  • Don’t leave your electronics unattended

When using your personal devices such as laptops, computers, phones – never leave them unlocked and unattended. If you do people will have easy access to your personal information and other sensitive information such as emails and passwords.

  • Talk to your parents

If you are unsure of something or if something online makes you feel uncomfortable, make sure you talk to your parents or an adult you trust about it.

Top Tips for Parents

  • Placement of devices

Try to avoid placing the computer in your child’s bedroom. Having the computer in an open area such as your living room allows you to monitor what your children are using the computer for.

  • Set a clear list of rules for your children to follow

Your rules should account for your child’s age and maturity. You need to decide if your child has access to a set list of websites. Are they allowed to use social networking sites such as Facebook? Are the allowed to use the computer for fun?

  • Learn about internet safety yourself

If you aren’t sure about internet safety yourself, talk to someone who is. Learning about the internet yourself will allow you to pass more accurate information on to your children.

  • Install parental control software

Parental control software can help you to limit the websites that your children can visit, limit the amount of time they are spending online and monitor what they are doing online. If you use this method make sure you talk to your children about it so that they are aware.

  • Install a firewall or antivirus software

Most operating systems will have a pre-installed firewall – but for extra defence against potential viruses and cyber-attacks you should also install anti-virus software.

The internet can be a valuable and fun resource for all ages, but it’s important to ensure everyone knows how to use the internet safely. Are you taking part in Safer Internet Day this year? Let us know what you’re doing on Facebook or Twitter.
