It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is just around the corner, which means children all over the world are starting to feel that festive buzz.

With so much excitement in the air, it might seem quite challenging to keep little ones focused and calm.

Arts and crafts are a great way for children to channel their energy whilst enhancing their cognitive development at the same time – and its super fun!

We have compiled a list of five easy and inexpensive Christmas crafts for children to get stuck into - either in the classroom or at home:

Cardboard Tube Characters

You will need:
- Cardboard tube (toilet tube or kitchen roll tube will suffice)
- Paint
- Glue
- Felt tip pens
- Decorations (e.g. glitter, felt, stickers, pom poms, feathers etc.)

Cardboard tube characters are extremely easy to make and really let children’s imaginations run wild. You can create anything from an elf, a snowman, a reindeer or even Santa. They can be as creative or as simple as you like, and best of all, they’re made entirely from things you more than likely already have in your craft cupboard or around the house.

Christmas Hats

You will need:
- Coloured card or paper
- Glue
- Felt tip pens
- Decorations (e.g. glitter, felt, stickers, pom poms, feathers etc.)
- Scissors (always supervise and assist children when cutting things out)
- Googley eyes

You can make any type of hat you like quickly and easily. You can do a reindeer, an elf, a snowman, Santa Claus or even create a winter crown fit for a king or queen. Like the cardboard tube characters, these hats are made from things you probably already have, so you don’t need to spend money on getting more supplies.

Popsicle Stick Christmas Tree

You will need:
- Popsicle sticks
- Glue
- Felt tip pens or paint
- Decorations (e.g. glitter, felt, stickers, pom poms, feathers etc.)
- Scissors (always supervise and assist children when cutting things out)
- String

Popsicle trees are super fun to make and are great additions to anyone’s Christmas tree this year. The possibilities are endless with popsicle trees. If you don’t want to layer sticks on top of each other, you can glue three sticks together in a triangle shape instead.

Gingerbread Men

You will need:
- Coloured card or paper
- Glue
- Felt tip pens
- Decorations (e.g. glitter, felt, stickers, pom poms, feathers etc.)
- Scissors (always supervise and assist children when cutting things out)

These sweet treats are really easy to make and look fabulous when they’re decorated. For younger children, try cutting out a template for them and letting them create a family of festive gingerbread people.

Paper Baubles

You will need:
- Coloured card or paper
- Glue
- Felt tip pens
- Decorations (e.g. glitter, felt, stickers, pom poms, feathers etc.)
- Scissors (always supervise and assist children when cutting things out)

This classic children’s Christmas craft is a must-do activity for any little one at this time of the year. Handcrafted baubles are sentimental decorations that add a bit of sparkle to any Christmas tree or festive display, and they are great to look back on in years to come.
