It can sometimes be a struggle to know what to do with little ones on a bank holiday, especially if you’re on a budget.

We have made a list of the top 10 things you can do with your children this bank holiday that require little effort and next to no money.

Go for a walk

Why not get your wellies on and go explore the great outdoors? Find a local park or walking trail and make a day of it. Not only is it great in terms of exercise, but there is so much fun to be had outside.

Have a picnic

Weather permitting, a picnic is a great idea. Get the children involved in making sandwiches and packing up the basket, then enjoy your afternoon in the park. Ask friends and family to come along and enjoy a nice, relaxed afternoon with great food and great company.

Do some gardening

There are lots of plants and flowers that can be sown at this time of year, so get your shovels and spades out and turn your garden into a blossoming jungle. It doesn’t take much money to purchase some tasty vegetable seeds or beautiful flowers like sunflowers, but the rewards at the end of it are priceless.

Visit a theatre

This one might require a little more money, but local theatres are a great activity. They are a lot cheaper than national theatres and just as good. Check your local theatre website to see what’s on for a fun day out.

Go on a scavenger hunt

Hide some treats in the garden and go on a scavenger hunt! With Easter just around the corner, now is the perfect time to see what the Easter bunny has hidden around the garden.

Create a time capsule

Capture those precious childhood years by creating a time capsule and burying it in the garden. Write little notes, draw special pictures and pack away sentimental items that will be fondly remembered in years to come. Paint your capsule and make something truly unique to your family.

Have a movie night

Movie nights are a fabulous way to end the day and are something to look forward to. Treat little ones to sweet snacks and snuggle up under a blanket for a cosy night in.

Have a puppet show

Do you have lots of odd socks? Dig them out and turn them into puppets! Find an old box to be your stage and decorate your socks with eyes, hair and big smiles!

Host a sports day

Sports doesn’t have to be a chore. Create a fun obstacle course for your children using household items such as buckets and cushions. Time them and turn it into a fun competition with a prize for the winner.

Visit a museum

Museums have a reputation for being boring, but most have interactive displays for children these days to encourage them to have fun whilst learning. Most are free to visit and can take up a good chunk of the day, so why not take your little ones along and see what you can learn?
