In the UK Mothering Sunday, or Mother’s Day as it is now more commonly known, is held on the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday. This means the date changes each year and in 2017 it falls on Sunday 26 March.

Mothering Sunday is a special day when people celebrate and appreciate mothers and mother figures including grandmothers, mothers-in-law and step mothers.

Historically, it is thought that Mothering Sunday was a time when people returned to the church where they were christened or baptised or the church they attended as a child. It was a special day when families were reunited even when the children were grown up. People working in domestic service were given the day off to visit their mothers and they often took a gift of flowers or cake home. 

Traditionally the fasting rules of Lent were relaxed on Mothering Sunday and people often made and gave gifts of Simnel cake. This is a rich fruit cake with a layer of marzipan in the middle and one on the top. Eleven balls of marzipan are put in a circle on top of the cake to signify the 11 disciples (not including Judas). Simnel cake is also heavily associated with Easter and this cake is a great treat to make during spring.

Nowadays, children, no matter how old, give cards and gifts such as flowers, chocolates, jewellery.  Families will often get together for Mother’s Day and celebrate by going out for a meal or afternoon tea. Schools and nurseries will usually make cards or other simple gifts with children for them to give to their mums.
